From around late May to early July, the lotus flowers bloom in a small pond at the Dean Whitter grounds on East Ocean Blvd, in my adopted hometown in Stuart, FL. Lovingly tended by Tom Brinks over the past five years, the pond with its wonderful variety of papyrus, water lilies, and aquatic life has regular visitors year round. Little green heron hang out in the clumps of reed hoping to snatch a meal out of the school of brim drawn to the shade. Lunch time and after hours you often see someone, obviously dressed for business, unwinding on the viewing bench, meditating on the serene scene any time of year. But the blooming of the lotus draws a special group of devotees to sketch, photograph and meditate on the flower’s facinating race thru metamorphis. After the bud opens, each bloom only lasts a day, then withers away from their strange seedpod who’s stem eventually droops so the big seeds can fall out into the mud bottom of the pond. When Tom Morey took over the grounds at Dean Whitter in 1995, the pond had been neglected and was in pretty sad condition but by the next season Tom’s careful gardening produced a beautiful bloom of lotus and water lilies. Every May since then an appreciative audience has enjoyed the fruits of his labour to sketch, photograph, meditate or simply breath in and enjoy his unique water garden. Tom spent 30 years as a construction and supervisor for Jans Deveopement before retiring to Stuart in 1985, but always loved gardening and figured he might as well get paid for enjoying his hobby. He lives in Jensen Beach with his wife of 35 years Margaret.
